This one-day workshop introduces participants to the principles and practices of creating and conserving wildlife ponds. Whether you're a nature enthusiast, gardener, or conservation volunteer, this course provides the knowledge and skills needed to enhance biodiversity in gardens and wider landscapes through effective pond creation and management.

The day begins with an overview of the ecological importance of ponds, followed by practical guidance on designing and constructing a garden pond. Participants will explore common issues and learn how to troubleshoot pond-related problems. The course then delves into the fascinating flora and fauna that ponds support, and the role of ponds in larger conservation strategies.

In the afternoon, participants will receive an introduction to pond survey techniques and health & safety considerations before heading outdoors for a practical fieldwork session.

About the tutor

Richard Griffiths has spent the past 40 years surveying ponds of all shapes and sizes on six continents, with a particular emphasis on frogs, toads and newts. He is currently co-director of a not-for-profit organisation that undertakes wildlife pond construction and monitoring across England and holds an Emeritus Professorship at the University of Kent. His latest co-authored book 'The Lives of Frogs' was published by Princeton University Press in June 2025.
